facebook history manager
Falsely accused of drug use in the workplace?

A friend of mine had a part-time job at a major retail store at the mall. Once on facebook she commented that “Sally is not on heroin!” as a joke to her other sarcastic friends. She has never had any history or problems with substance abuse. When she came to work one day at her part-time employment, the manager pulled her aside and said she had looked Sally up on Facebook and was concerned that she had a heroin problem and didn’t want her handling cash at the store. The manager had also questioned the other employees in this area Sally. The situation made Sally so uncomfortable at work she had to quit.
My question is… is this legal? Can the manager get in distress for this treatment?

Sally should be mindful of what she puts out there for anyone to read, even if she’s joking. Thankfully this was just a starter job and not her career. Many college admissions offices use myspace and facebook pages in their choice making too. It’s perfectly legal.
